Struggling with Uneven Skin Tone?

Returned from your summer holidays feeling fresh and recharged only to look in the mirror and notice uneven dark ‘freckle-like’ patches that weren’t there before your tan died down? Or, perhaps it’s been a couple of months since you noticed them and they are still rearing their stubborn heads?

Sounds like you have hyperpigmentation – which is triggered by excess sun exposure.  If you want to resolve areas of uneven tone and hyperpigmentation, here are our suggestions:

What tweakments can work for hyperpigmentation?

While hyperpigmentation can be a stubborn skin condition, we recommend you the following treatments to try:

IPL: Intensive Pulsating Light ( IPL) is a solution for age spots, sun pigmentation. However, if Melasma (hormonal pigement) is the issue, this might not be the best option.

SkinPen Medical Microneedling: Combining the skin-tightening benefits and the collagen-boosting, skin-smoothing effects it can also treat mild sun damage, with limited downtime (1-3 days).  Melasma can also be treated with SkinPen, but in combination with the correct home care routine.

What kind of home skincare do you need?

We highly recommend the combination of different vitamins and retinol as well as sunscreen SPF50 whole year round. Each skin needs different approach. Remember, skin pigmentation is long term battle and needs to be checked and treated every year.

What happens after IPL laser on face?

After IPL therapy, you may experience: Slight bruising, burning sensation after the treatment. Age spots and freckles looking darker for the first 3 – 7 days, which is normal. Skin becoming crusty or flaky, which may last 7 – 10 day. It is important to wear SPF50+ every day after IPL treatment.

IPL treatment heats up the surrounding tissue and melanin, with a higher risk of burns on darker skin types and due to the heat produced, can actually stimulate and increase the appearance of the darkened pigmentation and is therefore not recommended.

Avoid very hot baths, showers, steam baths or saunas, and don’t swim in strong chlorinated water for two or three days. Don’t use bleaching creams or perfume products for 24 to 48 hours. Avoid exfoliating or peels for one week. Try to avoid wearing tight clothing for two or three days.

While you heal:

  • Don’t put on makeup if your skin hurts.
  • Use moisturizing lotion.
  • Protect yourself with sunscreen. Make sure it has an SPF of at least 50 and a physical blocker like zinc.
  • Wash your face with cleanser for sensitive skin.
  • We will be in contact after the treatment and we encourage every client to come for a check up after IPL treatments.
